Poptropica is a really interesting game, to say at least. There’s an entire community based on it, but nothing is perfect, and the same thing goes for Poptropica. So let’s take a look at some of the most hated updates on Poptropica’s history! Keep in mind that I don’t necessarily hate all these updates (hate is a really strong word), but they’re dislike by the majority of Poptropica fans.
By the way, I’m really sorry for the inactivity! I’ve been busy with family activities and been working on some pages and island guides, but hopefully, I’ll try to post more in the future.
#7: THE NEW SOUND-UPDATED MAP
The old map had this old and adventurous feel into it, which was really unique and awesome. It was build in the old classic formal (the non-SUI, since the map existed before SUIs, of course).
While the new updated map wasn’t half bad, it wasn’t something we really wanted. It was build in the SUI-format, which can cause glitches and be laggy sometimes, and the unique island logos didn’t appear unless you clicked on the island. Also, islands were organised by popularity, which is kinda dumb, since SUIs got mixed up with classics.

From the PHB.
Recently, the map got organised into groups, such as adventure islands, challenging islands, etc. That makes the map even more random. 😐 Also, now, when you log in, you automatically go on Home Island, instead of the real homepage, which is kind of a bummer, since there were daily quizzes, you could see your friends’ daily activity, etc. Oh well…
Even though the update was really hated, it was a great improvement too. When you click on an island now, you’ll see it’s difficulty, how many times you beat the island, a description, and more!
#6: POPTROPICA WORLDS
Poptropica Worlds is, well, the all-new version of Poptropica! With beautiful art, new & remastered islands, houses and so many more cool features! While I enjoy Poptropica Worlds for the most part, there are a few things that can ruin the experience for you…
- Poptropica Worlds released with FAR too little content. They said that the game would start with more than just one island, pets, and other features that are still nowhere to be found…
- Where was no friends feature! Common Rooms and having friends was super fun, but they can’t be found on Poptropica Worlds. 😦
- Not all promises were kept. While the creators said that our outfits would be transferred, we now have to come up with new ones, unfortunately. I understand that this would be too much work, though.
Please keep in mind that this game is new, and it’s improving for the better, so I can’t wait to see what’s next!
#5: THE HOME ISLAND MOVIE THEATER
When the Movie Theater was first-seen, everyone was super pumped about what would be inside… and when it got released, everyone absolutely hated it.
The design of the building and the rich man talking about it made it look like it was AMAZING, but it was… um… how do I put this up nicely… a pile of crap (I failed at being nice, oops).
Sorry, Poptropica, but if you want to appeal to the younger kids, you’ll have to try better than putting nursery rhymes and other cringey videos for kids under the age of 4. Heck, those videos didn’t even belong to Poptropica! What bugs me the most is that Poptropica has a few animations of its own, and they’re MUCH better than this thing.
#4: THE REMOVAL OF IN-ISLAND MAPS
Oh boy, here comes the ranting…
Remember the island maps? No-no, not the Islands’ Map; that still exists. I’m talking about the maps that could be found in each classic island. If you’re not aware, they got removed in 2015! Like, why would you wanna remove a really useful tool anyway? That doesn’t make any sense.
I mean, I get that some islands and pretty easy and you can complete them without a map (like Shark Tooth, or 24 Carrot), but there are also some pretty difficult islands where you can easily get lost (such as Vampire Curse or Cryptids).
Come on Creators! What was the point of removing them in the first place? (By the way, if you really need a map, you can visit the PHB’s map page. There’s a map for every Poptropica original island! Even for the SUIs!)
#3: MEMBERSHIP
Membership is a way to keep Poptropica alive, and like it or not, it’s not going anywhere. It was first released in 2010, and left A LOT of fans angry…
While membership does not affect the gameplay of the island, a lot of other things require membership.
Membership has its own pros & cons. First of all, there would be no Poptropica, nor Poptrppica Worlds without membership. It’s an interesting way to keep the game alive.
While some things about membership are really stupid, more particularly on Poptropica Worlds. I won’t get through everything, but feel free to read this rant, if you haven’t already.
#2: SOUND-UPDATED ISLANDS (SUIs)
Sound Updated Island aren’t considered that bad anymore. I mean, who doesn’t love Jeff Heim’s music? But when they first came out they were SUPER glitchy, and they still are, at some point.
SUIs started with the announcement for Beta Carotene, where members got to beta test the SUI version of 24 Carrot Island. Since it was a beta test, it was almost guaranteed there would be some bugs. but when SUIs OFFICIALLY game out, they were still super glitchy. Some people hated SUIs but kept playing Poptropica, but some players were really disappointing and quit altogether.
Sound Updated Island started improving and becoming less glitchy, but most people still prefer classics over SUIs, including me. I actually never had a reason to hate SUIs, since I started playing Poptropica on 2014, and they’re not such a big deal anymore, but I still prefer classics more anyway.
#1: MAKING SEVEN SPONSORED ISLANDS MEMBERS ONLY
I don’t know what got into the Creators, but this idea absolutely SUCKED. You think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. The idea of making 7 Islands Members-Only was hated so much, that got voted for the Poppies TWO FREAKING times as the worst Poptropica update!
I was really mad when that happened, since I didn’t have the chance to beat one of them, that being Red Dragon Island…
Well, I still got to play the island when it won on the March Madness contest, and you can also get the medallions through iPop, but imagine the players that don’t know about glitching; some of them were crushed! Making non-members play the islands a month later was one thing, but making seven islands members-only is a bit TOO mean, don’t you think?
Some of these updates may have ruined the experience for some Poptropica players, but every game has some bad updates, and Poptropica isn’t Club Penguin to flop and make a more crappy mobile-only version of the game. (Disney if you ever buy Poptropica, I swear, I’m going to murder your CEO in your sleep)
Anyway, thanks for reading this list! It took me a while to make, and if you enjoyed it, please show support by commenting on our comment section below! That was PC, signing out til my next post!

the worst update is them making every item free, no point in those coin things. I never played the game much but them removing that got rid of all the in game money i had

My least favorite update: Whenever the flip they made it so you couldn’t access the items/customizer/map without opening that crate in non-SUIs.
(I’ve been playing this game way too long. XD )

Y’know, that was also a stupid update. Should’ve added it as a honorable mention. Oh well.

If Poptropica was bought by Disney, here is what would happen:
– Poptropica will be available only on mobile
-99% of all things, from islands to outfits, will be members only
– The islands will be crappy, almost like a crappy direct-to-DVD sequel, Disney Themed Islands, like Mulan Island (you got to save a cricket), Wall-E Island (you got to finish cleaning the Earth), Moana Island (you got to fix a boat), and 20 Frozen islands (most of them involve Olaf and butt jokes)

If that happens, I’m going to die.

The update you forgot is the update that removed the home screen… There is 2 reason why it was bad. first new players did not get the Pop quizzes like what! And second you do not get to see your friends recent activity.. Oh by the way I asked Skinny moon on why the home page was removed and she said this “Some sort of technical reason, I believe. Honestly I don’t remember. Sorry – that’s a boring answer but the truth”! So there was a reason why!

Pingback: Pop 5: Most Detestable Updates – Poptropica Help Blog
Oh my god, I just recently remembered this game from my childhood and finding out about these updates make me so sad. I remember being so excited when one of my favourite book series turned into an island to play in and so I loved the Diary of A Wimpy Kid islands so much! But then I find out that they made them members only?? GOD, I FEEL BAD FOR THE KIDS WHO WON’T GET TO EXPERIENCE IT. Also sadly I won’t get to play anymore since I haven’t been on for years oof. Really sad that my account’s been deleted.
